Abstract

The paper is a brief summary of a one-hour tutorial focusing on practical aspects for newcomers to the field of quantitative liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), rather than on theoretical aspects. An introduction to atmospheric-pressure ionization (API), ion sources, and tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) was give. So-called matrix effects, their sources, investigation, and methods of avoidance, selection of an appropriate internal standard, and selectivity limitations were discussed in detail. The potential and limitations of LC-MS were shown. In this paper no applications are presented, because many applications of LC-MS(MS) have been published in the literature.
