Abstract

This introduction to the first section of The Unexpected in Oral History: Case Studies of Surprising Interviews describes the chapters authored by Luiza Porto, Steven High, Ann Cvetkovich, and Ana Maria Mauad. It proposes a brief reflection on research experiences in oral history in which silences about events and memories are informed by the narratives collected, raising ethical, political, and social dilemmas, and also implying the subjective reconstruction of the researchers’ personal and professional identities.
