Abstract

Conventional compressor or crank mechanism compressors is being replaced by linear or non-crank mechanism compressors. This paper presents the mechanism of linear reciprocating compressor along with designing, modelling and early works accomplished so far. Designing and implementing Vapour Compression Refrigeration (VCR) system using linear compressor for electronics cooling is discussed and compared with conventional compressors and methods used. Various miniature scaled compressors which were designed to validate the performance such as thermodynamic and overall efficiencies, volumetric efficiency, power input and motor efficiency have also been focused. The paper also describes the key advantages over conventional compressor such as energy recovery and inherent capacity modulation. Crucial characteristics for yielding best performance from linear compressor such resonance, piston drift, piston offset, clearance gap, etc., have also been discussed. Finally, scope and challenges of linear compressors have been presented.
