Abstract

This chapter contextualizes developments in the international business environment that have facilitated the emergence of the global factory. It analyzes the distinctive nature of the global factory and how it differs from a traditional multinational enterprise (MNE). The chapter also discusses key implications of the growth of global factory systems for international business thinking. The chapter introduces the concept of the global factory and outlines the factors that have facilitated the emergence and growth of global factory systems. It examines the distinctive characteristics of the global factory within the context of a case study of Amazon and its attempts to impose a global factory system within the publishing industry.
