Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides a short examination of the state of the art of EU diplomacy and its functions and puts forward a glimpse into the historical, legal, and international context that defines it. It looks into the foundations of diplomacy, the reasons why states practice it, and its present-day value to international relations as a means of conducting foreign policy. It then shifts focus to the European Union, a newer and atypical diplomatic actor. The chapter gives a historical account of EU diplomacy and an overview of (the extent of) the EU’s diplomatic network. Finally, legal questions surrounding EU diplomacy are outlined.
