Abstract

Abstract The present chapter discusses the ways in which gases of rotating molecules differ from monatomic gases and indicates the consequences that such differences have for the formulation of a valid kinetic theory of polyatomic gases and the description of nonequilibrium phenomena. The material presented here is intended to provide a general overview of the subject matter appearing in the following eight chapters, and is meant to place in perspective a number of developments that have taken place in the kinetic theory of dilute polyatomic gases.
