Introduction to Cystourethroscopy

Abstract

Injury to the urinary tract is a known complication of gynecologic surgery. Morbidity and mortality from urinary tract injuries can be prevented by intraoperative detection with cystoscopy at the time the injury occurs. The objective of our film is to demonstrate the technique of basic cystoscopy for detecting intraoperative urinary tract injury following gynecologic procedures. Cystoscopy can be used to detect ureteral obstruction, cystotomy, intravesical suture placement, and urethral injury. We utilize a commonly available rigid cystoscope for simplicity in our demonstrations.
