Abstract
The paper provides an introduction to connectionist computing. It shows that connectionist methods differ from conventional methods mainly in the type of virtual machine that they exploit. Whereas conventional methods use virtual machines founded on the von Neumann architecture, connectionist methods use highly parallel machines made up of many simple processing elements connected together in a network. The paper also presents examples of learning in connectionist networks.
