Abstract

After a brief history of adhersive bonding, the absolute basics of adhesive bonding (wetting of the adherend followed by hardening of the adhesive) are introduced. Current theories of adhesion, namely physical adsorption, chemical bonding, diffusion, electrostatic attraction, mechanical interlocking and weak boundary layer, are described. Finally some aspects of polymer chemistry which are essential to adhesive are presented. These are polymerization, glass transition temperature and viscoelasticity.
