Abstract

Campbell explores the contemporary environment for factual television science programme production, defining and charting the rise in factual entertainment television. The chapter begins with an outline of concerns about the current landscape of television science, and then offers an overview of the historical development of science in factual television tracing the key organisations, programmes and figures in the development of science documentary on television. It identifies a changing landscape from traditional science documentary to contemporary science factual entertainment television, linked to the development of multi-channel, multi-platform and international markets, the development of new genres of television programme (such as reality TV), and the emergence of new techniques such as computer-generated imagery (CGI). The chapter concludes with an overview of the aims and structure of the book.
