Abstract

Traditionally, paediatric and neonatal parenteral nutrition (PN) has been prescribed as a bespoke product, which was compounded in-house or outsourced from commercial providers. Due to limited stability of the admixtures, the majority of prescriptions were compounded into two containers - a lipid syringe / bag containing lipid and vitamins, plus an aqueous bag for amino acids, glucose, electrolytes and trace elements. In this large specialist children’s hospital a limited number of older / larger patients were prescribed a multi chamber bag (MCB), either whole or part as appropriate to their needs.
