Abstract

AbstractA geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system that is used to store, manage, analyse and display geospatial data. GIS has been used by professionals in natural resource management, land use planning, natural hazards, transportation, health care, public services, market area analysis and urban planning since the 1970s. It has also become a crucial tool for normal operations for government organizations at all levels. GIS integration with the Internet, GPS, wireless technology and web services has recently found applications in location-based services, web mapping, in-vehicle navigation systems, collaborative web mapping and donated geographic information.
