Abstract

Summary form only given. BT is to deploy two 16-channel dense wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems, in the first step towards a high-capacity all-optical transport bearer network for the United Kingdom. This technology will help to develop BT's information superhighway, making it easier, for example to support the use of new interactive video-services, such as shared space and telepresence. Up to 40 Gbit/s-16 times more than can be carried over BT's current long-distance systems-can be transported using the WDM systems, which are to be implemented on two of the longest and busiest routes in the United Kingdom, in the north of the country. The systems are expected to enter service in early 1998. WDM systems planned for 1998 are of a point-to-point nature, and include two radical new features: optical protection switching and transparent transponder interface to the WDM system.
