Abstract
School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) has always had a strong musical pedigree. In April 2012, a workshop was held entitled 'Past, Present and Future: The Diversity and Distinctiveness of Korean Music and Dance'. Organized by Professor Keith Howard, the event brought in some of the most prestigious authorities on the subject from the UK, North America, continental Europe and Asia for two days of discussion and performance. The two music papers ( kayagŭm, yangqin and samulnori ) from that workshop are unified into musical origins. The third paper follows on from investigations by scholars like Hyung-Il Pai and studies of Korean heritage that explicitly challenge nationalist accounts. The final paper shifts the focus from the relics and remains of the state heritage industry to Korean art works, and the collection celebrating the Centre of Korean Studies (CKS) anniversary comes full circle and ends where it began, at SOAS.
