Abstract

Modern industry, agriculture, communications, transportation, science, and medicine are unimaginable if minerals and metals were not produced today. Mining is a highly capital-intensive fast-growing industry and it spans globally across all continents. The three important factors showing the significance of understanding to manage mining operations are raising demand for metals and minerals leading to huge costs and investments in mining, the contribution of mining to national economies, and the type of mines. This chapter is an introductory chapter to the world of mining, its origin, its relevance to modern industry, and personal use, along with its major contributions to various national economies. The chapter also includes a section on the phases and processes in large-scale open-pit mining operations.
