Abstract

This chapter discusses the conceptualisation of Islamophobia as cultural racism by comparing it with anti-Semitism and theories of racism, as well as considering how Orientalism, imperialism and colonialism have contributed to contemporary Islamophobic discourse. Jackson argues that the racialisation of Muslims can best be understood through a critical race theory framework, which takes into account historical discourses and their contemporary articulation. The analytical and theoretical aims of the book are presented through a series of questions: What is Islamophobia? How does it construct boundaries? And what purpose does it serve; why do people choose to ideologically represent Muslims and Islam in this way?
