Abstract

This paper introduces essays concerned with feminism and politics of resistance in India. The essays constitute contributions to feminist theory and attempt to define and differentiate terms related to the subject matter which are closely identified with each other. The articles briefly described in this paper include 1) Life Experiences Resistance and Feminist Consciousness; 2) The Bleeding Edge: Resistance as Strength and Paralysis; 3) Rokeya Sakhawat Hosains Gyanphal and Muktiphal: A Critique of the Iconography of the Nation-as-Mother; 4) Bearing Witness: Rape Female Resistance Male Authority and the Problems of Gender Representation in Popular Indian Cinema; and 5) The Desiring Subject: Female Pleasures and Feminist Resistance in Deepa Mehtas Fire. By way of context for and further engagement with the topics the essays address the author follows some reflections upon feminism and the politics of resistance both building upon and in some instances diverging from their concerns.
