Abstract

This book is the result of two collaborative research projects carried out at the Laboratory for Education and Society in Leuven. This first chapter briefly clarifies their shared focus and research interest: to investigate: (1) how the educational scenery is deeply re-enacted and restaged in the emerging learning society; (2) how this evolution affects the possibility or impossibility of public gatherings; and (3) how the clarification of the public character of educational practices contributes to the elaboration of an educational philosophy and theory for the learning society. It is further indicated why it was decided to write in the form of ‘sketches’ in order to contribute to theory development in a particular way.
