Abstract

On its twenty-fifth anniversary (October 2002), the University of Crete awarded Charles Tilly an honorary doctorate. This collection of articles comes from the international conference on “Contentious Politics and the Economic Opportunity Structure”1 held on that occasion. The invited contributors presented current research on social movements that (a) expanded on the concept of “opportunities and constraints” or (b) pointed to alternative ways of approaching major issues in the study of social movements. Referring to a national, regional, or global context, they aim at contributing to a better understanding of contentious political ventures, marked in our days by the persistence of violence, the importance of media, and the quest for environmental and economic sustainability.
