Abstract

This chapter introduces monolithic diode-laser arrays. Section 1.1 provides some historical background on semiconductor diode-laser arrays, and Sect. 1.2 gives a brief review of work on non-semiconductor laser arrays. Performance limitations of single-element diode lasers, enabling technological advances, and applications that have contributed to continued research and development of monolithic diode-laser arrays are discussed in Sect. 1.3. Concepts and designs of high-power, coherent diode-laser arrays are reviewed in Sect. 1.4. The primary focus is on the geometrical structure of the array and less so on the details of the epilayer structure of the diode.KeywordsDiode LaserArray ElementSpatial CoherenceOutput BeamExternal CavityThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
