Abstract

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies with cellblock preparation or small tissue biopsies have become a primary modality to achieve a definitive diagnosis of a mass-like lesion of the superficial and deep-seated organs. This chapter (1) provided an overview of application of FNA; (2) delineated fundamental approach to an FNA sample; (3) summarized major and minor cytological criteria for some common entities encountered in daily practice; (4) illustrated some of the most effective yet small diagnostic IHC panels for tumor of unknown primary/undifferentiated neoplasm; (5) described some chromosomal translocations which are highly specific for certain solid tumors; and (6) highlighted the most frequently used molecular techniques on FNA and small tissue biopsy specimens.
