Abstract

The Fe2O3 particles were introduced into the PET fiber by melt spinning method to prepare the Fe2O3/PET fiber. Through scanning electron microscope (SEM), limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter (CCT) and tensile strength tester, the micro-morphology, flame retardancy, smoking suppression and mechanical properties of Fe2O3/PET fiber were analyzed. The results indicated that when the content of Fe2O3 particles was 1.2%, the LOI value of Fe2O3/PET fiber increased from 20.4% to 26.3%, and the vertical burning rate reached the B1 level. The peak heat release rate of Fe2O3/PET fiber peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) has decreased by 29.1% and 32.4%, respectively. Especially, the total smoke production (TSP) dropped from 13.7 m2 to 5.9 m2, with a decrease rate of 56.9%. The breaking strength of PET fiber was reduced by 10.78%. The Fe2O3 particles as novel flame retardant (FR) could be applied in the PET fiber.
