Abstract

This paper outlines the background and focus of the Disasters Study Group recently established within the British Sociological Association. It highlights the key issues in disaster studies, and and reinforces the value of research-based disaster management founded on the complementary perspectives of academics and practitioners. Given likely future trends in disasters and their management, the value of continuing discussion, networking and multidisciplinary research is emphasized. Details of relevant journals, organizations and websites concerned with disaster management and research are included.
