Abstract

This chapter explores educational opportunities to present visual calculations in special relativity. The presentation relies on spacetime diagrams that are drawn on rotated graph paper and use a minimal amount of algebra. It is intended for readers who look for instructional tools to teach concepts of special relativity at the upper secondary school level. Special relativity forces upon the reader a new view of time and space, with some consequences that are puzzling to their common sense intuition. It turns out that special relativity (which is well-supported by an abundance of experimental evidence) says that Terrence's wristwatch displays less than 1 second. The chapter provides brief statements of the principles of special relativity: The relativity principle and The speed of light principle. The relativity principle was first formulated in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems with regard to mechanical experiments.
