Abstract

A brand-new membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabrication method was conceived. The performance of the MEA using an MPL attached catalyst coated membrane (CCM) was equivalent to that using the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) method, indicating that the coated interface between the cathode catalyst layer and the MPL plays a significant role in achieving better MEA performance. In the performance evaluation using a porous metallic flow field for the cathode side, the MPL attached CCM showed much better performance than a normal CCM under a dry operating condition.
