Abstract

Relationships between signalling rate and channel capacity of communication systems are generalised to the case of all information machines. A maximum rate of measuring and controlling, which is related to the physical elements of the system, is defined. It is also shown that essential noise may be related to these physical elements. Hence, the Shannon-Hartley theorem of information theory is seen to be applicable to all information machines.
