Abstract

The effect of natural birefringence in (11N) oriented Quantum Wells (QWs) due to the in-plane optical anisotropy is investigated. The birefringence is more pronounced, the stronger the anisotropy of hole effective masses and larger the splitting of the heavy- and light-hole sub-bands. The magnitude of the effect is maximum in (110)-oriented QWs. An order-of-magnitude estimation of the effect in QWs of GaAs and of ZnSe is given.
