Abstract

Approximately 80% of teen pregnancies are unplanned. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are among the most effective reversible methods of birth control. As limited data has been published regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of IUDs in adolescents, we elected to test the hypothesis that adolescents have higher IUD expulsion, failure, and discontinuation rates as compared to adults. Our goal was to provide female healthcare practitioners with new information to enhance their practice and improve their patient counseling regarding the use of IUDs.
