Abstract

Summary This paper presents a study of advanced registry Guernsey records to determine the effect of carrying the calf on the milk yield of the mother during that pregnancy. The data show that the carrying of the calf is slight but significant drain on the mother's milk producing capacity amounting to from 400 to 600 pounds of milk with an energy value of about 125 to 200 therms. The carrying of the fetus has no influence on the butter-fat percentage.
