Abstract

Summary We present the results from a reliability study of spectral data of postural sway measurements. Centre of pressure (CoP) trajectories in the anterior–posterior (AP) and medio-lateral (ML) direction were assessed in elderly, healthy adults. The reliability of spectral outcomes of the CoP kinematics varied between low ( .8) levels (Interclass-Correlation-Coefficients (ICC); 0.67–0.96) and was higher for narrow stance compared with normal stance conditions. Coefficients of variation (CV) ranged from 19% to 34%. Conclusions Fast Fourier Transformed (FFT) centre of pressure (CoP) kinematics should be viewed with some caution because their reliability cannot always be assumed.
