Abstract

Summary There is an entity of solitary benign spindle cell mesothelioma which grows in relation to bronchi within the lung, but is unrelated to the pleura. Its similarity to growths reported as "fibrosarcoma of bronchus" is pointed out. There are morphogenetic sequences in embryonic pulmonary development which could account for a mesothelial tumor arising without pleural contact. A designation of paramesathelioma or stromal mesothelioma is suggested as more appropriate than "fibrous" mesothelioma for those mesothelial tumors which differentiate as spindle cell growths similar to ovarian fibrothecomas or are derived from submesothelial mesenchyme. Doctors Alfred Goldman, Edward Shapiro, Maurice Hyman, and Marvin Harris permitted use of the clinical material.
