Abstract

The values for the effective diffusivity of isobutene (iB) in the liquid-filled pores of Amberlyst-15 (A-15) have been obtained from reaction measurements. The reaction conditions included four temperatures (303-333 K), various tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) concentrations (0.1-2.5 kmol/m 3 ), and two sizes of catalyst particles (0.5-1 mm). Intraparticle diffusivity was found to increase with temperature and decrease with TBA concentration. Apparent values for the tortuosity factor change from 1.3 (at high temperature in pure water) to about 4.5 (at low temperature in TBA-rich solutions). The role of surface diffusion and the effect of the change in the solvent viscosity are discussed
