Abstract

The objective was to evaluate whether intra-operative ultrasonography during elective uncomplicated cesarean delivery is effective in depicting ureteral jets in the urinary bladder. If the technique proves useful in cases with damaged or obstructed ureters, it will be a valuable addition to the toolkit of modalities for intra-operative assessment of ureteral integrity. In thirty patients undergoing uncomplicated elective cesarean delivery, intra-operative trans-vesical sonography was performed to demonstrate the ureteral jets within the maternal bladder. In 28/30 (93%) patients the ureteral jets were demonstrated bilaterally. In two cases the jet was demonstrated on one side only. In one case this was due to the absence of the ipsilateral kidney. In the second case, both kidneys were normal. A jet was demonstrated in 58/59(98%) of ureters. When the ureters were visible, this procedure increased operative time by an average of two minutes (range 0-5). In all cases the postoperative course was uneventful. Depiction of ureteral jets on intra-operative trans-vesical sonography during uncomplicated elective cesarean delivery is feasible and safe. The procedure may verify the intactness of the ureter.
