Abstract

Introduction: Sentinel node analysis is critical for staging patients with breast cancer and thus determining their treatment. At present most centres rely on departmental histological analysis of sentinel nodes using haematoxylin and eosin staining. This can take 3-4 days, requiring patients to have a second procedure for an axillary clearance. This is distressing for the patient, financially draining and congests operating lists. OSNA (One-step Nucleic Acid Amplification) has been advocated as one method for intra-operative lymph node analysis.
