Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the Third Workshop on Computation and Approximation (Comprox III). It was held in Birmingham, England, 11-13 September 1997, in combination with a Summer School. The series of Comprox workshops was part of a bilateral project between England and Germany, funded by British Council and Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. The project was initiated by Abbas Edalat from Imperial College, London, Achim Jung and Marta Kwiatkowska from the University of Birmingham, Klaus Keimel from Technische Universität Darmstadt, Reinhold Heckmann from Universität Saarbräcken, and Ulrich Behn from Universität Leipzig. A first workshop was held in London in 1995, a second in Darmstadt in 1996. More details on the activities of this consortium can be found at the this website. The purpose of the project and the workshops was to collaborate over new applications of Domain Theory to problems in Measure Theory, Integration, and computations in Fractal Geometry, first discovered and studied by Abbas Edalat. During the course of the project, the topic of exact real number computation became equally important. The current volume contributions in all these areas.Contributions to the proceedings were invited after the workshop from all participants and were sent to two referees. Comments and suggestions were forwarded to the authors who thus had a chance to amend their texts. The final versions were accepted by the editors. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all referees for their time and cooperation, and Michael Mislove for his invitation to publish the proceedings in the ENTCS series.22 July 1998Abbas Edalat, Achim Jung, Klaus Keimel, Marta Kwiatkowska
