Abstract

The following article outlines the important steps taken to develop a Standard Operating Procedure for handling injuries during intramural ice hockey at an ice arena. The existing SOP for handling injuries did not include ice hockey and needed to be modified in order to facilitate the circumstances of a new ice rink, a new intramural sport, and an inexperienced staff. When no published guidelines were found while these new procedures were being developed, we created our own which we are sharing. The SOP development was separated into stages: researching the rules of the sport and the injuries that might occur; examining the facility for emergency exists and determining staffing and responsibilities; the classification of injuries and how to reach and remove the injured athlete; and, staff education, game day responsibilities, and the evaluation of the SOP was performed.
