Abstract

Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM), also referred to as “inlet patch”, is an ectopic salmon-colored gastric mucosa that is located just distal to the upper esophageal sphincter [1]. Most HGM are asymptomatic and detected incidentally during endoscopy. In endoscopic studies, the reported incidence varies from 0.29 to 13.8 % [2, 3] but autopsy studies have reported incidence ranges between 12 and 20 % [4, 5]. Although most consider HGM as clinically negligible entity, it has been associated with symptoms such as globus, dysphagia, and pain and has been linked to acid-related complications such as bleeding, ulceration, stricture, and fistula. Moreover, in exceedingly rare cases, dysplastic changes and malignancies in association with HGM have also been reported, [1]. We here report a case of intramucosal adenocarcinoma arising in HGM of the cervical esophagus, successfully treated with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Case Report
