Abstract

Different mechanisms leading to very fast collision induced vibrational relaxation are discussed. For molecules in the electronic ground state It Is shown that anharmonic Interactions of CH-stretching modes and overtones of bending modes or higher order combination tones are essential to understand the most efficient decay pathways. C2H2 is discussed as an example. For molecules in the electronic excited state anharmonic interaction can be induced by vibronic coupling between different electronic states. The anharmonic interaction can be very strong. As example pyrazine is investigated.
