Abstract

Traditional and complementary therapies are increasingly sought with the goal of preserving or enhancing health. There is a burgeoning global trend to purchase “immune stimulants” and other complementary therapies on-line and at health food shops without consideration of potential allergenicity and cross-reactivity. We report a case of shellfish anaphylaxis followed by recurrent anaphylaxis likely caused by sensitization to chitin (crustacean shell)–associated substances in acrylic nail glues and an “immune stimulant.” A diagnosis of “idiopathic anaphylaxis” is frequently given to unexplained adverse reactions.
