Abstract

Cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum in the chloromonadophycean alga Gonyostomum semen contain 16 nm diameter microtubular structures which are morphologically identical to the flagellar hairs on the surface of the anterior flagellum of this organism. These intracisternal microtubules are thought to be an intracellular stage in the formation of flagellar hairs, as has been postulated to be the case in a number of other heterokont algae.
