Abstract

To show the effect of hypertrophy on the intracellular pH of cardiac muscle, pHi was obtained by simultaneous determination of 14C-labelled DMO and 3H-labelled inulin. The experiments were performed in artificially ventilated male Sprague Dawley rats at a body temperature of 37.6 °C. At Pa co 2 = 40 torr the following values were obtained (control values obtained in normal rats in brackets): pHa = 7.330(7.363), pHi = 7.067 (6.948), calculated intracellular CO 2 = 13.3 (10.3) mM/kg H 2O, calculated intracellular bicarbonate 12.0 (9.0), calculated intracellular buffer value − 110.7 (− 56.0) slyke. It is concluded that a correlation exists in cardiac muscle between the intracellular buffer capacity and the mechanical work load.
