Abstract

Summary Light microscopic and electron microscopic studies of a transplanted adenocarcinoma of human origin indicate that a calcium-containing inorganic compound having a crystalline structure is present within the tumor cells. The crystal lattice is probably that of hydroxyapatite. Intracellular calcification appears to start along surfaces afforded by finely granular or fibrillar material occurring within well defined vacuoles within some of the viable tumor cells. The crystals are very small and similar in appearance to those seen in bone.
