Abstract

In fetal life, a communication route on interatrial septum (foramen ovale) exist. This shunt exists for delivering high oxygenated umbilical venous blood to vital organ (brain and the heart). Normally interventricular septum is intact during and after fetal life. Prevalence of intracardiac shunts is high (VSD 1/200 livebirths, ASD 1/1500 livebirths). Atrial septal defect (ASD) is classified according to its embryologic origin; septum primum, septum secundum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus defect Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is classified according to its location inside of the right ventricle; Inlet, outlet, perimembranous, muscular type. Ultrasonographic characteristics and clinical impacts of intracardiac shunts will be presented.
