Abstract

SummarySixty-five patients with intra-uterine adhesions were seen in five years. The mean age (±s.d.) was 29–6 ±4–7 years. Symptoms had lasted from 6 months to 12 years. There was secondary amenorrhoea of at least 6 months in 37 (57 per cent), scanty periods in 21 (32 per cent) and irregular cycles in 7 (11 per cent). The commonest predisposing factors were uterine curettage in 40 (62 per cent), and caesarean section in 18 (28 per cent).Patients were treated by division of adhesions and insertion of an intra-uterine contraceptive device for three or four cycles. Oestrogens and progestagens were given for the first cycle. Normal menstruation returned in 44 (68 per cent), being commoner in patients whose condition was secondary to uterine curettage (82 per cent) than those secondary to caesarean section (50 per cent).
