Abstract

In developing countries, social and cultural bias is believed to exist, favouring a particular age and sex group in the allocation of food, medical care etc. In the present study, the intrafamily distribution of calories among preschool children and the adults was analysed. A one day recall method of diet survey conducted by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) among 1878 rural households in 10 states of India during 1975–80 formed the data base. In 31% of the households the preschool child, adult male and female were consuming adequate sources of energy while in 19% the intakes were inadequate. In about 25% of households, the intake of adults was adequate unlike that of the preschool child. Intakes of boys and girls were essentially similar. The adult male did not consume his share of energy at the expense of other members. Female literacy status had a significant positive effect on the energy status of preschool child.
