Abstract

Purpose: Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) provide afterload reduction and improve diastolic coronary perfusion. In principle, it is ideal for cardiac surgery perioperatively and recent meta-analyses support this, having reported lower perioperative mortality with IABP for high risk cardiac surgery. However, IABP placement is known to cause major complications in 2.6% of cases. In light of this we aimed to review our institution's use of IABP and complication rates.
