Abstract

Summary The intra- and interspecific relationships of Campylobacter mucosalis and Campylobacter hyointestinalis were studied by numerical analysis of gel electrophoretic protein profiles, DNA : DNA hybridizations and determinations of the DNA base compositions. C. hyointestinalis strains, isolated from porcine, bovine and human sources, showed high DNA binding values (> 64%) and had similar DNA base ratios (33.6 to 35.2 mol%). C. mucosalis strains, representing the different serotypes within this species, also showed high DNA binding values (> 73%) and had similar percentage G+C values (36.0 to 37.4 mol%). Several protein electrophoretic types within both species could be distinguished visually as well as by numerical analysis of the protein profiles. Our results indicate that polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of whole-cell proteins is a reliable method for typing these strains and might be useful in epidemiological studies.
