Abstract

An autopsy case is presented of a fetus with Ultra-sound (US) diagnosis of intra-abdominal calcification. Histology revealed typical Cytomegalic inclusions in nuclei and cytoplasm. A routine US detected abnormalities at 16 weeks. There was growth retardation, echogenic gut, ascites without hydrops and (paradoxically) oligohydramnios. Chromosomal analysis was normal. Meconium peritonitis was suspected. Still birth occurred at 32 weeks. At post-mortem there was no evidence of meconium peritonitis. Histology revealed cytomegalic inclusions in kidney, lung and intestinal mucosa. Numerous calco-spherites were present in luminal mucin. The features of cystic fibrosis were lacking. It appears from this case that Cytomegalovirus infection can cause changes mimicking meconium peritonitis on US.
