Abstract

SYNOPSIS The analysis of tonal phenomena is rendered difficult by the relative levels of pitch and by an apparent lack of system in their occurrence. Recent study has provided a methodology of studying tonal data, which can not be properly described without recognition of intonation. Tonal and intonational phenomena must be distinguished and separately described. African tone languages reveal intonational systems.
