Abstract
Raised plasma LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration is a key risk factor for atherosclerosis, and statins are the most important preventive treatment. The Cholesterol Treatment Trialists' Collaboration showed a 10% reduction in all-cause mortality per 1·0 mmol/L reduction in LDL-C concentration in landmark statin trials, largely because of a reduction in coronary heart disease deaths.1 The yearly rate of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularisation, and ischaemic stroke was reduced by just over 20% per 1·0 mmol/L reduction in LDL-C concentration.
